Early in her practice, Joan worked as an associate at a
law firm and established a business practice where she
represented new businesses, partnerships, closely held
companies and public companies. She then continued on
her business and corporate path and served as General
Counsel for a closely held corporation. As General
Counsel, she led the Legal Department and Human Resource
department and was heavily involved in all aspects of
operations. During a period of fast-track growth and
expansion, she managed the corporate legal affairs and
provided business counseling to all levels of
leadership.
In the wake of September 11, it was apparent to Joan
that life can be wrenched from our grasp too quickly and
it is important to identify and pursue your goals today.
Following her own dreams, she immediately created the
Law Office of Joan L. Jakel, P.C., a legal practice
dedicated to her passion of advising and assisting
business owners reach their dreams and goals.
Joan is admitted to practice in Arizona state court,
federal district court and the 9th Circuit Court of
Appeals. She is also very active in the business
community. Joan has served on the Board of Directors of
the Phoenix Theater and TruWest Credit Union and
currently serves on the board of directors of the Tempe
Chamber of Commerce. Joan also had the privilege to
serve as the immediate past Chairwoman of the board of
directors of the Tempe Chamber of Commerce. She has also
chaired the Tempe Chamber’s Ambassador Committee,
Nominating Committee and Business Excellence Committee.
She has served on the Government Relations Committee and
the Good Government Committee.
In 2004, Joan was the recipient of the Business Woman of
the Year award. She was also recognized by the Business
Journal as an East Valley Business Leader in the
Spotlight. Joan is a proud graduate of Tempe Leadership
Class XXI, which is a nine month leadership program. As
part of her ongoing desire to educate, Joan has been a
visiting presenter at Collins College, key speaker at
the Rich Now Seminar, co-presenter of an HR seminar at
the Tempe Chamber, and panel member at Tempe Leadership
program addressing business issues. Joan believes in the
value of contributing to her community and has

organizations, Tempe Cares, the MS Society, Seton
Catholic High School’s athletic programs, St. Mary’s
Food Bank, The Center for Habilitation, is an annual
sponsor of her nephew’s baseball team and adopts cats
and dogs from various rescue organizations.
In addition to staying abreast of the legal and
business issues, Joan believes in striving for a healthy
balance of mental, physical, and intellectual
well-being. True to her beliefs, she competed in her
first triathlon in the same year that she established
her law firm. Since that time, she has competed in
multiple endurance activities, including ultimate
frisbee tournaments, duathlons, various road races, and
the MS 150
which is a 150 mile bike ride to raise money for MS.
Her favorite activities are running at sunset with her dog,
Zorro, in South Mountain; road biking with her husband;
horseback riding in the mountains; enjoying a fabulous red
wine with great friends; reading an inspiring book and
sharing it with others; attending a yoga class with healthy
minded friends; attending her nephew’s baseball games; and
traveling to various inspiring destinations with her
husband.
